fic: this korean fic called Vampire House. pretty good. not-fic: this was actually because i had an exam, but the last thing i read was a play titled Emily of Emerald Hill. it got on my nerves the first few times, but it grew on me and it really is quite symbolic if you think about it.
i remember reading ficmix review anon and anon's comments about author notes a pg or so ago. but thinking back on that now bc it just popped into my head, what are anons thoughts on authors notes? in terms of length and content and position
i think short notes that explain a bit about the story (maybe some warnings or a sentence or two from the author about the story itself) are a useful tool. but i also think that if they get too long it might be better to place these thoughts at the end of the story instead of right before. i will admit that some long and oddly put authors notes have made me not read a story before. i suppose i could just as easily ignore them, but if they are right there staring me in the face i tend to skim read them before reading a fic.
I personally like reading about what an author thinks about their story but I prefer those notes at the end so that I can decide what I think of the story first without the influence of the author's note. but the ficmix notes that are saying how they're sorry for changing the story in such a way seem kind of pointless since that's the whole point of the challenge.
ficmix anon here. sorry for missing yesterday, but i've been preparing to go out of town this weekend and haven't had time. i also won't be posting reviews for today or tomorrow. if anyone wants to take over starting the thread(s), go ahead. if not, i'll catch up next week.
dude, thanks for being so diligent about reviewing these past several weeks!! it's always a pleasure to read what you have to say :) have fun this weekend!
Yilun keeps a tiny notebook hidden in the space between the wall and the mattress in which he writes down everything that annoys him. The stylists and producers alike tell him he needs to smile more, be angry less, and Binbin echoes the nagging at home the second the telltale crease forms between Yilun's eyebrows. Yilun likes to pretend he can take it all in stride and maintain his composure, but he knows he'd be lost without his little book.
There's a special section of the book, or rather the entire back half, dedicated to Yusheng. Yusheng is the reason Yilun started the notebook in the first place. The very first entry is Yusheng's snoring, written by the light of his cell phone at three in the morning when they all had to be awake in two hours. Eventually Yilun got used to the snoring, and the entry was crossed out with a meticulously straight line- in pencil, just in case he changed his mind.
Yusheng's is the thickest section and grows daily. Sitting down in his bed and listing out everything that has annoyed him during the day is his ritual. The last person Yilun sees every day is Yusheng, curled up and asleep within seconds of hitting the bed, so it seems natural that Yusheng features so prominently in Yilun's book (Yusheng blasts Show Luo for over an hour, Yusheng eats all of the snacks, Yusheng talks too much, Yusheng sings in the shower). Venting through his notebook keeps him from snapping at his roommate, band mate and friend, and that can only be a good thing, especially considering Yusheng reacts much like a kicked puppy to every clipped word or phrase. No matter how irked, Yilun can't stop the pang of guilt that hits when Yusheng gives him those wide, sad eyes. Unfortunately that twinge of guilt only makes him more annoyed, and so the pages fill.
The room is dark and Yilun slides the notebook back into place. With a relieved sigh, he sinks back against his pillow and lets his eyes fall closed. This is one of the best parts of the day, after he's finished writing and can let himself drift off into peaceful, unburdened oblivion. There's a muffled cricket chirping outside their window and something creaks in the hallway. Just as Yilun is drifting off, Yusheng shifts in his bed across the room. Yilun is entirely too familiar with the sounds that come with sharing a room with Yusheng, and he follows the familiar rhythm of Yusheng's movements, the rustling of the covers being thrown back, the soft thunk as Yusheng's knee hits the floor, the slow breathing coming closer.
Yilun rolls over onto his side as Yusheng crawls into the bed. Tonight he's too tired, he tells himself, to fight his friend's childish habits. "Don't blame me if Binbin teases you again," he grumbles as Yusheng wriggles a little closer. Arms slide around Yilun's waist and he's tempted to struggle, but instead he stays perfectly still and waits. Gradually the breathing slows again, the snores are at least quieter tonight. Yilun reaches into his secret space and draws out the notebook. He uses the light from his phone and scribbles, Yusheng can't sleep alone when he misses his family.
Yilun sees no point in omitting repeat entries, and this one graces almost every page.
Yusheng blasts Show Luo for over an hour yusheng waylt /o\
nonnir ヽ(´□`。)ノ how could u put me into an emotionally fragile state like this nooooooooo ;;;;;; sobbing this is the drabble i wanted to read right after i realized alen and vinson were roommates ;;; ty (。┰ω┰。)
a while back there was an anon talking about wanting a rabbit doubt au for infinite. it's a long shot but anon, are you still around? because i found one. except it's in french and on the french equivalent of aff.
(thanks anon for organising the list so neatly) :*
the author should have cut the beginning and end entirely imo. surprise cock and the seamless transition into fwb/lovers somewhat soured an otherwise good fic. that said, their interactions were cute and believable. warm fuzzies everywhere n____n
i feel like i judge people in fandom too much for the littlest things. i feel bad, but then again i'm not sure if i want to change. i also can't tell the difference between being less critical and lowering my standards.
anons, i'm not the only overly-judging one here, right?
