oo ia with you on the influence a note can have on reading a story. if an author is just apologizing for their work or making off putting statements (i can't come up with any right now) it makes me go .__.? same thing if there's a huge list of an author thanking a bunch of people and writing specific messages to certain people. i read through the whole thing thinking there's something the author wants me to know before reading and it's just personal messages :/

a quick thank you to betas and such are fine, they don't bother me. it's mostly the omg so sorry!!! type comments that are kind of off putting to me. sometimes if I read a long fic I think it's fun to see what the author actually thought. or if it's a note to explain what they were inspired by...I find that interesting? because sometimes what they say might inspire me to comment or write something based on something similar but with my own spin. or even just a flippant comment or a bit of a joke is okay too, since idk maybe it'll get people in a chatty mood since just chatting is a fun part of fandom too.
