let me start this by saying i really don't want to take sides in this whole racism/skin color thing i see going on. i just want to share my experiences, and my friend's, as someone who's currently living in asia.
i live in thailand, which is very different from korea but they share the skin color thing (pm the majority of asian cultures do). i've been living here for seven months and one of the first warnings i received was about their attitudes toward skin color. aesthetically speaking, thai love light skin. the whiter, the better. they actually bleach themselves and end up vampiric at times. it's weird and unhealthy, but it's how the culture feels as a whole (there are obviously exceptions) and it'll be a while until it changes. HOWEVER, considering that there is not a huge diversity of ethnicity in thailand, i can safely say, and all of the thai people i've spoken with have explained this to me, it's not about race. they don't see white vs. dark as different races; they're just two different ways people look. and they favor one side. coming from the usa, where we've had huge issues with race and see white vs. non-white as an extremely racial subject, it's hard to wrap our heads around.
i'm also white, so i can't say much in terms of my own experiences. all i know is that women and man alike come up to me and fawn over my skin, wishing they could trade with it. my friend, though, is african-american, and he's been in the country for only a couple months. every day he has students (we'te teaching him) bringing him pictures of random black people and laughing and saying the people in those pictures are my friend. children and adults alike joke with him and call him 'obama.' all of this, at least to me, would seem extremely insulting, but he's seen it as, i don't know, liberating?

i was reading up on some hugo schwyzer wank the other day and thinking a lot about the role of men in the feminist movement. i do think that deconstructing masculinity is important but idk how i feel about a dude preaching to ladies about what it means to be a lady.
so legit question to POC anons on meme: what do you think the role of white people should be in discussions of race? in real life, i may comment if an ignorant white person is the one broaching the subject but i usually just listen if people of color are talking. and i generally don't comment about race on meme since there's no way for me to know who i'm talking to.
