da but what kind of discussions do you need to be involved in? if poc are talking about issues that affects them only, then they are entitled to that.
(i'm not being sarcastic, i'm curious)

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 11:11 am (UTC)(link)
i don't have any particular in mind, but i'd like it if i bring up some opinions/discussions about race that i could discuss it with other people without being told my opinions don't matter because i'm white. i know i will never, ever understand what it's like to be poc and that i have privilege. and you're right, if pocs wanna butt me out, they're entitled to of course. i would still like it if every once in awhile i could be a part of the conversation. i ain't tryin to step on toes and start shit, y'know. it would be cool just to be able to discuss those sort of things without it turning into white guilt for me.

nobody is telling you to turn it into white guilt.

there's a question of race relations. everybody knows where the system stands (like you know, how trayvon martin was a thug but a white man causing a massacre was shy and intelligent). we don't need white people's opinions in that.
what is needed is for poc to talk about it because it affects them in a way that it doesn't affect you. when poc talk about the police, they're talking am experience a white person will never have. when poc talk about the system, it's not something that you need to participate in. you can listen and that's good! that's all you need to do.

but really, please specify what kind of questions, though? like were there specific conversations lately that you wanted to take part in?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 11:29 am (UTC)(link)
that's kind of how it turns out though? this is gonna sound fucked up again, brace yourselves, but all the comments in here like "you sound white" and "i don't care about white people's opinions" just makes me feel bad for being white. which i know, sounds fucked, in that i shouldn't feel bad for being white at all. it kind of goes in line with the i can't help my privilege sort of thing? i can recognize it and try not to make things worse, still can't help it.

there isn't any specific instance i'm talking about, i mean, more like, in general.

genuinely curious, how old are you/what is the level of schooling you are at rn?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 11:37 am (UTC)(link)
23, not in school due to medical condition.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 11:35 am (UTC)(link)
it's nothing to feel bad about, anon, i promise it isn't. your white and therefore you're lucky that you don't have certain experiences and when poc talk about them, it's really something you don't need to have a say in. when i say 'you sound white' i literally mean it because you seem as though you have no idea about how race relations work. when i say that i don't need your white opinions, it's because i actually don't care for it at all and it's not necessary for me to have your opinions.

i think you're missing the main point of it, anon. it's not a conversation you're needed in. idk how to put it nicely but, like i said, everyone knows where the white system stands. your say is not necessary at all. i'm sorry but you're just starting to sound entitled. everywhere else is a white world, let poc have this small thing to themselves

i don't, i really don't. but it still comes acrossed as fucked up. which was my original point.

no, it comes across as fucked up that you would want to push your opinions on people who frankly neither want it nor need it. another anon said that if you asked questions, rather than stating your opinion, it would be better and i definitely agree.

steamrolling into a poc's conversation with your opinions = bad white person
going into a poc's conversations with questions, after you have done your own research (because it's not their job to educate you) = good white person

da but thanks for this comment, anon.

da but what are these opinions or ideas that you have about race that need to be brought up in a conversation amongst poc? questions, i understand and encourage, but what knowledge do you have that will contribute to the discourse and why does it matter to them? it sucks to be ignored in any circumstance but when you don't have the authority to speak on an issue, it's best you don't, regardless of what enlightened piece of information you want to share. white peoples' role in a discussion about race amongst poc is to learn, not teach.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
nothing in particular, i'm just talking about in general. i don't suppose it's knowledge so much as is it opinion. i'm just talking about discussion for discussions sake here. i don't intend to teach. it's more of a sharing of ideas, opinions, etc.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
i mean, what exactly is it that you want to gain from these discussions? it seems to me that you genuinely want to learn more about the issues, so why not just phrase these things as questions rather than opinions? having a discussion about race is perfectly fine, great even, but it's just a given that you're bound to offend or say something that's problematic to him/her (this happens in most other discussions, i think) because you don't have the full knowledge of the issue. just take it in stride and try to convey your opinions/thoughts in a way that communicates your intentions.
