just tore a fic apart on ff.net. it had a gazillion plot holes and really ooc characters, yet the author was smug about his "11 years of original+fanfic writing experience" and how he "learned from it, unlike other authors he reads" and has therefore grown "disappointed with the quality of fic in the fandom lately."

it's kind of interesting how different patterns emerge in different fandoms. before getting into kficdom i had never seen anyone use "the other" instead of a name or a pronoun in fic. and yet even the worst kbadfic never uses "orbs." there's definitely something to be said about how style can be memetic within fandoms.
