it's kind of interesting how different patterns emerge in different fandoms. before getting into kficdom i had never seen anyone use "the other" instead of a name or a pronoun in fic. and yet even the worst kbadfic never uses "orbs." there's definitely something to be said about how style can be memetic within fandoms.

euphemism are actually really common in other fandoms, i thought. i was bored and googling around for a bunch of articles aimed at ff writers (though most were written back in around '06 and earlier) and they always had a section devoted to euphemisms
