this is definitely a ymmv thing but i don't understand how some people just write the same pairing over and over again. i understand mastering a dynamic and exploring it in different ways but even so that feels very stifling creatively to me.
and i think, given my time in both kpop and bandom where you have people who either write every pairing or just one, that the fic of prolific pairing writers can very easily become stale.
I don't really care myself if an author writes the same pairing all the time. i'll admit that i'm an offender of this for a certain otp. if it's what someone loves to write and really enjoys writing about, then all the power to them. i think the stifling creativity part may depend on the person and how they are approaching the pairing given that characterization is just a fluid concept and the writer could just shake things up in different scenarios (unless they are just phoning it in bc it's expected of them or something??). but i agree that it is a good thing to write fics about people/pairings you don't normally think about in order to change things up and get some practice in.
I find when I first get into a fandom and it's fic/pairings, I'm really happy just reading as many fics about my otp as possible, and writing as many about them as possible, exploring them in different situations, from different angles, in different ways, there's enough to keep me entertained and creative! I don't find it stifling at all.
ah ok i seem to have misunderstood. lol yeah the slow thing. i do agree that he's occasionally slow but not at all to the extent some ppl are bringing it? he can be quick and witty sometimes, idk.
I always start off reading/writing only one or two pairings and branching off as I lounge around the fandom longer. esp with writing it's just a comfort zone thing for me not that I don't want to write more variety
I'm sure yours is much better than you think! But I know mine was awful, I don't think I'm going to enter any kind of contest again anytime soon because nothing good comes out of it for me ;;
thank you all for weighing in! i was just wondering how approaches to writing might differ between the type of writers who write one pairing mostly and the type that write many? i know for me that i tend to come up with ideas more generally and then weigh a few options about who would fit best. i assume that you would go into brainstorming with that pairing specifically in mind? or just talk in general about your method for coming up with ideas, i'm curious
ideas come to me with characters already filled in, whether those characters are my usual otp or someone else. i never ever have plot ideas that are "separate" from who the story is about; it always comes to me as one big package. to me, plot and character arc are inseparable!
idk what it is but i can only get as far as planning fic these days. it could be the most detailed plan in the whole damn world but as soon as i try to actually write the fic proper i just give up ;~;
lately (as I've only just recently gotten back into writing again after a long break) my ideas tend to come with the pairing/characters already in mind. I'll go like "what if I did this to character x" or "what if this pairing live in this world, how does their relationship develop?" etc. even non pairing things, I tend to already have ideas for which characters are going to fill which rolls.
usually the pairing and the idea come hand in hand. i think about a pairing and then some ideas pop in my head that i'd like to see written. i have a pretty big imagination for strange events that could happen even if i never get around to writing them.
I don't usually do a whole lot of planning. my kfandom fic is always character or relationship centered so a fic idea can't really come to me without the character or pairing. and mostly I just write on whim, so there's not a whole lot of brainstorming going on in my writing process unless I'm sitting down to write specifically for a challenge or a prompt.
