The deadline to turn in fics has been pushed back to Nov 12. I apologize for the last minute change but I have to travel unexpectedly for personal reasons and will not be available for the next week or so. If you have any questions or concerns please email me at kficanon@gmail.com and I will get back to you as soon as I can.
i have legit given up on meme, i swear i can't deal with some of the shit and some of the racism and sexism and the ones getting riled up for no reason (like gain's third world comment) and some of the crazy stans and ppl thinking it's cool to post a comment about the color of someone's shirt
there actually was no shirt thing. i'm just pressed that some of the comments are really pointless or just detailing that they find someone cute or whatever i'm an old memegoer. i just like to yell at the kids to get off my lawn ):
i think you're sort of contradicting yourself with the "getting riled up for no reason" part. a lot of ppl who call problematic things out, like op of this thread, are accused of just getting riled up for nothing. also ppl have very different views of that counts as "no reason". sometimes, i think it's better to call stuff out and then take the discussion from there than to, like many do, just tell other what they can and can't be offended by.
da but the thing to me is that gain didn't actually say third world, she said india. the translation said third world. getting riled up about something she said when she didn't even say it, is stupid as fuck.
i should have worded it better. i definitely think there is a good point op raised, but when we're talking about korea, things generally have very different standards and a very different concept. i was just annoyed by that one anon who got really pressed by a translation of the word 'third world'. so yes, if it's a legit actual grievance i am okay with that and i totally support that. but sometimes people do get annoyed about very minor things
i get what you're saying and i do agree with you to a certain extent but "sometimes people do get annoyed about very minor things" is a comment very often used to silence ppl who call out actual issues. what's small for you may be veyr big for something else, and vice versa. now, i do agree one should always take the possibility of mistranslation into account in these situations, and one might also want to pick their battles/try to channel their energy into what's most efficent. i can also think that ppl are getting annoyed over petty things sometimes, but it isn't really up to me to decide what is petty or not in their opinion.
if something was problematic then it's good that it's called out and it should be, regardless of who the comment was made by - but if something is silly because of a mistranslation, then that anger shouldn't be placed there exactly, if you know what i mean? i think it's good to call out stuff as they're seen but when there's nothing really to be angry about then i don't get it.
although i can't really come up with any recent instances beyond the gain thing to mind so i'll just shut up now
sorry, "third world" is a racist as fuck term that is no longer used in many academic circles and should not be used in the media either.
it may not have racist origins but it's often used in a very racist way. the very fact that you think there is no reason to be riled up about it and that it's tossed around on meme a lot is very problematic.
anon, it wasn't that which annoyed me. it was the fact that gain said something roughly equivalent to third world in korean, it was translated into english and an anon was getting pressed about that. third world is racist as fuck, i'm definitely not disagreeing with you there, but i'm saying it was silly for anon to get annoyed about that in that context when chances are gain didn't say it or that it meant differently under the context

(Anonymous) 2012-11-04 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)have you even seen the thread in question?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-04 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)i don't exactly blame that anon either because "mistranslation" is a commonly used excuse by the "oppar/unnir didn't mean it" crowd.
sorry, i get prickly about "third world" because it's used a lot on meme. it was referenced in the "single eyelid" thread as well.
