i don't believe that cultural defense can't be used at all though, but this argument is interesting enough. like when i think about in terms of parents using reasonable physical means to discipline their kids (smacking, not throwing them against a wall), i don't see it as ghastly because i've heard about it a lot growing up and in my culture

oh i agree that cultural defense can be a valid thing. growing up in my region, it's really common to use physical discipline on children, like using belts and stuff like that. a lot of people would have a problem with that but it's really prevalent here!

i categorize this issue in the same vein as how girls are supposed to dress like how anons get upset when idols say they want a girl's skirt to be of a certain length. it's a cultural thing to be brought up in a worldview that sees modesty as important as a girl, i don't agree that this is right but i don't say it's completely heinous and all men and this culture should die because it's socialization - we've grown up this way. for example i cannot reconcile the fact my friend wears extremely short shorts and skirts and throws herself at guys due to my culture because 1. my parents told me this isn't right and 2. i personally see it as really cheap

but then you get into the area of just because it's someone's culture doesn't mean it's right or not a product of -ist thinking.

i think culture is just prolonged socialization and if people get angry about it and want to change it, they're not going to be able to do it in a year. it'd take generations so you either work towards changing the way the descendants think or accept it

my friend made a compelling argument like her friend was brought up in a culture that really devalues females. my friend's friend is female, and she didn't see anything wrong with not having her own rights/the same rights as the males. my friend (and me) were both shocked but my friend told me the only reason why we think everyone is equal is because of socialization. we were brought up speaking english and by western thoughts - it's only because this is the dominant thought that makes it the "truth". i personally don't believe there is such a thing as truth, just the people in power being able to manipulate things into what they call 'truth'

no problem, anon! i'll be happy to discuss this with you any other day/time because i love talking about these things but if not, thanks for the discussion
