to be able to write long fics without losing the plot halfway / losing track of what i'm writing. also, to write a fic that readers will remember even hours after they finish reading.
i'm just writing more, reading more, and learning / absorbing from all sources (fics, books, etc). it's coming along decently, except that the sheer lack of comments is driving me up the wall because without comments, i can't tell what i need to improve on.
anon have you tried the corkboard method? basically what you do is write a bunch of scenes on sticky notes then put them on a board (or fridge or mspaint or whatever). then you rearrange them in chronological order, leaving gaps where you haven't thought of a scene yet. it's a great way of seeing where you need to plot things (and avoiding future writer's block) and it lets you get a feel for the holistic flow of events too. say you have five action sequences planned in a row; the pacing problem should become immediately obvious. i love it so much and don't use it enough, sadly, because of a lack of space.
kind of ot but i've been thinking about making a proper meme writing/beta group. fic discussion should remain on kfa but it would be nice to have a point of contact for people soliciting ongoing crit while giving it in return. drafts could be shared with the whole group or only one or two people in order to preserve anonymity. this way we could dodge the lack of comments problem most people are having, though i don't know much interest there'd be.
i actually have timelines of major events all planned out for multiple wips, but often it's the filling-in-the-gaps that is problematic. i'll try the corkboard method, though! thanks for the advice!
i'd be interested! there was kficconcrit or something like that a while back, but then it was deactivated :(
by scenes i mean minor scenes too. our problems might not be exactly the same but i loved how the corkboard method let me identify gaps that needed filling, before i got to them, and i don't burn out during planning anymore like i used to. hopefully it works for you too. :)
yeah, it's a shame about kficconcrit :( anonfeedme@dw is dead too. sigh
if we get like 3-5 ppl i'll make something \o/ would you prefer lj/dw or googledocs?
