to me I look more at where in the flow of the story a cut off would be appropriate more than actual word count. its like an intermission for your reader to digest what they've read so that the next part will be more meaningful or interesting or something. or you know a god place to pause to rest straines eyeballs like an intermission at a ballet because you've been on your ass too long

hehe thanks for the effort tho anon
i'm all for the break when the story needs a pause before the next part, yet i feel like i've read in certain places that readers like shorter chunks as opposed to longer chunks at one time. i can't say i've ever paid too much attention to the word count of a story...the only thing that really throws me off is if a story has a chapter thats say 8k and then the next is like 3k and then followed by 7k or something
