Jongin doesn't need to do any more research. He can tell from the colour of their suits and the swagger in their steps where these two men are from. The Regulatory Authority.
"So we hear you're something of an up and coming hotshot investor," Chanyeol says with a dumb smirk on his face. "We've taken note of your portfolio over the last couple of months, and let's just say we were… intrigued. First quarter earnings were through the roof, but second quarter, not so much…"
Jongin was starting to feel a little hot under the collar. "I made a few bad decisions, I'll admit…"
"Short selling the stocks of SME? Now that's not a mistake an experienced investor would make."
Baekhyun lights a cigarette, and blows smoke in Jongin's general direction. "We were also interested in your remarkable source of captial. 500k doesn't grow on trees, as they say."
"There's nothing illegal about using money from my own pocket," Jongin replies, his voice as emotionless as he can make it.
Baekhyun and Chanyeol fix their gazes on him. Baekhyun continues. "My father had a dream… a dream for a free country that flourishes on the hard work of its citizens, honest and fair trade. An economy that isn't tainted by the corruption of the chaebols…"
"What he's saying," Chanyeol butts in, "is that we eat inside traders for breakfast."
"In that case you have no business with me," Jongin says confidently and pushes past. The two men watch him go.
"Have a nice day, Kim Jongin," Chanyeol calls.
When Jongin makes it around the next block, his phone rings. It's Kyungsoo.
"Hey Jongin, I'm flying to Shanghai tomorrow. Are you in or are you in?"
"How long can I wait before deciding whether to go in on this or not?" Jongin asks, even though he already knows perfectly well that it's a now-or-never decision.
He can almost see Kyungsoo closing his eyes and sighing, shaking his head slightly. "Until the end of this phone call," he replies.
Jongin has always prided himself on being able to think fast under pressure, but the encounter with Misters Tall and Short has left him more on edge than he wants to admit. He pinches the bridge of his nose and wonders if Sehun might still be up for that shot of whisky. "Next time, then," he says. When I don't have a pair of watchdogs following my every move, he thinks to himself.
"Your loss," Kyungsoo says, and Jongin is greeted with the apathetic sound of the dial tone. It's just like him, Jongin thinks, but that doesn't stop it from being annoying.
"I made a new friend," Sehun tells him, cutting Jongin off as he attempts to warn him to watch his steps. "His name's Lu Han, and his connections suck way less than hours."
"That's nice, but can you listen to me for a sec --"
"I'm having a meeting with him right now," Sehun interrupts. "Call me back later, Jongin.
Jongin goes to get drinks by himself that night.
