a regular comment would be something appreciative that pm only tells you that they read the fic and that they liked it, pm a spazzing comment as you talk abt with anon below. a crit comment would not only tell that they liked your fic (if they did), they would also tell WHAT they liked and WHY they liked it. + a few things that wasn't great/that you could improve, and maybe a few questions abt things or why you chose to do things a certain way.

to me, posting a work on the internet is not in anyway a green light to tell the creator all your thoughts abt it. on a few occasions i have given constructive crit (with things i didn't like) without the author expressively asking for it, and in those cases i have been pretty sugar-coated abt it and tried very hard to be nice and constructive and do the crit sandwish lol, with two good points for every bad. still i have not felt very comfortable abt it in those situations, even if the author has responded well.

i know a lot of writers aren't interested in improving and write only for fun and then it can be rly unpleasant to have ppl pointing out stuff they didn't like abt something you did only for fun. maybe writing is your happyplace where you can escape from rl stress and issues, and then someone comes and ruins that for you? i don't know the authors story, and thus i am very careful with unprompted crit. even tho i sometimes hook up with a beta and sometimes ask for crit, some days i'm just not fit for hearing those things and then i do not want it. i hate it when ppl think of you as an amateur writer or some kind of wuss for this. crit is hard to take and i think the author should be able to choose when they're ready to take it. even though i am very serious about writing i do not always want to improve, i struggle with it to the point where i sometimes am just happy to be able to put a word on a paper and be content with it. that's the level where i'm at. and that's not a level where you can take crit.

leaving spazzy comments telling the author i liked their fic is always accepted i think, that's sort of the point abt posting fic right? i think most people think of it that way anyway. do you usually not spend a lot of time on lj?

at the same time, even if you do ask for crit i find that it rarely happens. and it can be hard to find betas as well. i think most ppl these days don't read fic very seriously (at least not in my fandom), it's a form of entertainment and they don't rly think abt it and then it's not in their nature to leave long deep crit on a piece. i love all appreciative comments lol, even if it's just a keysmash, although i think most authors have a soft spot in their heart for these long, analyzing comments that aren't necessarily crit bec they don't point out bad things but they show you that your reader really read your piece and absorbed it and thought about it carefully. but those comments are kind of rare. maybe this is a recent thing or it depends on the nature of the fandom or it's always been more or less like this, idk. but idt many people are inclined to give real crit, even when it's asked for.

da i personally find i really hard to give criticism. even when my friends ask me to beta their work, at the most i just change a few sentences around/fix grammar, but i just... can't give constructive criticism in terms of plot/character :/

ik it's really hard! i think both taking and giving crit is a skill in a way that must be practiced. especially giving (and it's so interesting how different betas have so different way of critting lol.) like what to crit? how to crit? what is important and what should you just not mention? i think so much of it boils down to taste and also i think it's so important to find a beta who is at the same level as you, otherwise it's hard to make it work. it's hard!! lol

thank you for your detailed reply! i was confused initially because i interpreted your first response as saying you could comment or give feedback and i wondered how they could be two separate things. i get you now, and i really appreciate you taking the time to explain how you differentiate between each type of comment.

for me, the trend that i'm seeing in kpop ficdom is that no comments are being left, spazzy or critical. i wasn't here much for this round of olymfics but if it went the way of every other fic comp or exchange there was a great deal of discussion on the meme, with anons dissecting each story and giving their opinions on everything from characterization to formatting and yet not even leaving a polite "thank you for writing" comment on the fic itself.

you're right in that writing, and especially fanfiction writing, is something we do because we love the artists and enjoy the writing process, but does anyone write for a void? i'd like some sort of acknowledgement of reading for anything i've done, whether it's a quick drabble dashed off in twenty minutes or something i've battled with for months, struggling with every word. i go to ao3 and see fics for popular fandoms with thousands of kudos and yet often we as a fandom can't even bring ourselves to sign the guestbook after reading a fic we've enjoyed.

i understand that you don't want to have something you do as an escape be marred by critical feedback, but just wondering - do you disable comments all together when you post to lj? i've never done that, nor seen it in kpop ficdom, and when the comment option is there i don't know how we can expect anyone to not use it.

yes, i believe that spazzy comments are acceptable! i was just confused by your comment, lol. in many ways i think they are expected, and while posting doesn't automatically mean you are entitled to a certain number of spazzy comments i think the onus is on the reader to let an author know when they've enjoyed reading their fic.

i've had a lj for around eight years now and i've been in kpop fandom for nearly half of that, and it's my changing experience with the ficdom that prompted my original comment. even two years ago i would see writers receive x amount of comments, and now when they post fics of the same calibre i see a quarter of those comments. i don't understand why this is happening and that's why i posed the question to the world/meme!

i didn't pay much attention to olymfics (altho i heard there wasn't many comments) but idt there was that much discussion over it here either? partially bec kfa was dead at the time, but idk. as i said idt ppl are so inclined to in-depth discussion, at least not rn. and tbh, having a dozen of ppl entusiastically reading and dissecting something written on the internet is a pretty curious phenomena to me, when i think abt it. i do not expect that to happen. maybe there's also not as many people reading fics around at the moment? less ppl = less comments.

i also definitely want acknolwedgement for the things i write, ofc. that's why i said that's why you post to lj, for the appreciative comments. i've seen some ppl disable comments on their fic but it's rare. idk what fandom you write for anon, but my ficdom is fairly lively and we do get comments on what we write. maybe not 20min drabbles, but write porn or longfic and there will be comments lol. but i haven't followed the changes of kpop ficdown very closely so idk tbh.

this is actually sort of my issue with anonmemes in general. especially when it comes to olymfics. there's a fair amount of discussion of meme on the fic, either praising it, or giving constructive criticism. but on the fic itself, i often see 0 comments. and i just think that if you can discuss fic on meme, you should at least write a simple comment on the entry itself just to show authors that their fic is being read + appreciated. i know a lot of fandoms complain about how desolate their fic environment is now, so i feel like at the very least, you should comment to encourage writers to keep on writing?
