Like comics or picture books? That seems like the classic bond of storytelling and graphics... Or are you thinking of something less pop culture and more like contemporary art?

A bit of both. I'm thinking along the lines of The Inventions of Hugo Cabret as well, where the art tells the story without words as well as the words with it?
