Sanghyuk was used to not standing out, so it was no surprise that his first week of school left him sitting in the dining hall alone night after night, casually watching other groups of students eat together. He knew a few names and faces, but they were all acquaintances, not even close enough where either party would feel comfortable initiating a conversation. Or maybe that was just Sanghyuk, because he had no natural knack for making friends.
But he'd expected it, and so he was convinced that he was okay with it.
In class he participated as much as the other students, but when it came time to assign partners in science, the teacher had to look around the room twice in confusion when he called Sanghyuk's name. Sanghyuk raised his hand and waited patiently while the other students snickered. "Ah, you're a lucky one," the teacher commented when Sanghyuk revealed he didn't already have a partner. "You get to work with Mr. Popular."
A group of girls giggled as the teacher turned to address a boy across the room. "Greet your new partner, Taekwoon."
Sanghyuk couldn't see the boy through the bodies between them, but he could hear stifled laughter when no reply came. Instead, a lanky both rose with obvious hesitation, not raising his eyes as the rest of the class watched him make his way over to where Sanghyuk sat, alone, at his table for two. With round eyes and a pretty mouth, Sanghyuk had a hard time imagining how this boy didn't already have a partner.
"Nice to meet you," he said quietly as the teacher moved on down the list.
Taekwoon sat and stared at the pencil in his hand. His eyes flicked over to Sanghyuk and he nodded, once.
Not exactly the reaction Sanghyuk had expected, but he laughed nervously and asked, "Are you a freshman, too?"
Taekwoon shook his head, and that was it.
Thankfully the teacher was beginning to explain the experiment to the class, so Sanghyuk turned his attention away and tried to swallow his mild panic. He'd met plenty of quiet people before, but there was something downright scary in the gloomy silence of his partner. Sanghyuk practically jumped out of his skin when something nudged his arm, and Taekwoon slid a small piece of paper towards Sanghyuk's hand.
Not daring to look at Taekwoon, Sanghyuk unfolded the paper apprehensively.

ikr i always joke that hongbin has the biggest crush on jaehwan because he's always touching/hugging on him and jaehwan makes him laugh so much ;; they're precious!
There's a loud thud on her window and Joohyun jolts up from her seat, breathing heavy and fingers grasping the air for the nearest heavy object. The closest thing in her reach is the Kerero lamp she's had since she was five, useless and short-circuited by now, but it's the only thing Joohyun has from home. In that sense, she doesn't think there's anything better to pummel an unwanted intruder with.
There's another thud, followed by three taps and Joohyun swallows, cautiously walking up the window. Fingers shaking as she reaches for the curtains. The lamp is heavy in her hands, and Joohyun inhales a deep breath before flinging the curtains open. What she sees makes her scream for entirely different reasons than she expected.
"What are you doing?!" she shrieks, quickly unlocking the window and pushing it open. Jung Yonghwa sat outside, the edge of his sneakers hanging off precariously from the ledge. With little regard for his awkward position he shoots her an impish smile, his endearing overbite making her stomach twist.
"Hey," he greets. Before he has time to say anything else, Joohyun grabs his arms and pulls him through the window. He stumbles inside unceremoniously, grabbing onto the curtain to prevent himself from colliding into her. When he steadies himself, they're only a few inches apart, chests almost touching, and Joohyun flushes and steps back. If the Dean found him in her room, she'd probably be suspended for a week. But she reasons that'd be a better option than letting Jung Yonghwa in all his rashness fall off her fourth story window and die. If only just.
"Are you insane," Joohyun whispers harshly. Only now, with him standing back, does she realise he's still in his rumpled school uniform even though it was past midnight. "What are you doing out so late? God, now I won't have time to check over my physics homework." she says, throwing her arms up in the air.
Yonghwa snorts, leaning up against the window sill and smiling bemusedly at her. "You're a sophomore, who cares about checking over your physics homework. I don't even know what college I'm going to go to next year."
"I know," Joohyun drawls, thinning her lips. "Why are you here," she demands again. "It's 12:03am."
"Is it?" Yonghwa asks, quirking an eyebrow and stepping closer.
Joohyun has to fight the urge to swallow her tongue. "Yes," she says, proud of her voice for not jumping up three octaves. "You have a wrist watch," she adds lamely.
Yonghwa looks at Joohyun, and raises a palm to cup her cheek. It's tentative and he's prepared to move away, and maybe Joohyun should nuzzle closer or return the sweet stare. Reach up to grab his shirt, tug at his sleeve and smile shyly. She can't bring herself to do anything though, but she doesn't want him to retreat either.
Joohyun is intelligent, analytical and cautious. And so she's confident. But tonight she's praying with all her might that she's not reading this wrong as she brings a hand up to rest over his own, and hope it says enough.
She thinks it does when Yonghwa's eyes crinkle at the corner. "Happy Birthday Seo Joohyun," he whispers against her lips before quite literally, taking Joohyun's breath away.
