one of the main problems i have with the tumblr sj movement is that it wants to divide everything into this set of privileges. so that being sexual is a privilege or, like, not otherkin and a.) not everything can be divided up this easily into privilege and not privilege and b.) the more you use a term the less power it has. when i first started reading up on peggy mcintosh many years ago it was such a startling idea and i think if my first exposure to sj was tumblr now i would even have bothered reading in depth about anything.
you've nailed exactly why i hate tumblr based sj discourse, especially concerning the term privilege
i also think people think that if they lack privilege in one area then it absolves them of responsibility when dealing with people who lack privileges that they themselves do have if that makes sense
like white queers who think they can't be racist, shit like that, tumblr sj makes it so that we're all on an equal playing field re: privilege and "no one should play oppression olympics" and shit like that when, no, actually, that's not how it works
the way i see people acting is like they're clinging to the one area they can claim oppression in. and it's not like if you're rich that means that your mental illness doesn't affect you or if you're white your sexuality doesn't affect you but everybody wants that trump card like it means they can say or do whatever they want without examining intersecionality. if that makes sense?

yes this exactly, it makes it so that you are only ever defined by one thing and you're never affected by anything else when that's the farthest thing from the truth, it's damaging and it definitely makes it so that people can avoid intersectionality when intersectionality is imo one of the most important things in any movement
i also think it's telling how little foundational understanding many tumblrsj bloggers have. and this really contributes to superficial readings and naming privileges where they don't exist ass such.
oh i agree completely, anon. i think that a lot of useful things have come out of such a widespread movement and even if it makes some one person feel better it's not really a bad thing but it just gets to be tiring? idk if i'm explaining myself well but yeah it's definitely more complex than the haters make it out to be
You're explaining yourself just fine lol, I just never see the side of tumblr sj that people hate and complain about because I try to steer clear of it and the handful of blogs that i follow dealing with social justice are woc just sharing their experiences and saying they want to stop being shitted on
