piggybacking off of what anons were talking about earlier, i am trying to build a rec list for my fandom and am having so much trouble. my standards are really high and my fandom seems to have a lot of mediocre fic... fic that didn't stand out or wasn't excellent with characterization, that for whatever reason i wouldn't read again. but as i'm reading it i realize that it might appeal to others, even if it doesn't appeal to me? so i just put a bunch of question marks in my document because i can't decide if i want to include it in my list or not. hrm. idk. i guess there are different kinds of rec lists and i should decide what mine wants to be...
anyway. that was a pointless ramble so maybe let's just have a general rec thread???
honestly, if you're going to make a rec list, i think it's better to have a short one full of things you actually like instead of a longer, more "comprehensive" one full of things that you only find mediocre, but that's just imho
yeah, i think so too. plus it's a rec list, not an 'ok fic list that passes a certain standard'?? it's stuff that i personally really like and would recommend to somebody else. plus if i'm recommending something, i don't want someone to read it and be like 'well that was underwhelming for a rec ig that's where the bar is for this person'
i've maintained a rec journal before for a fandom which has tons of mediocre fic and idk in the end i was like wth and recced pm every decent fic i found, mainly bc i was doing it for fandom at large and what might not appeal to me might appeal to someone else ?_?
i tried to make a reclist once that this is exactly why i quit ;_; that and i kept wondering if my tastes were off and if something had a really good plot and was really engaging but the grammar or spelling was off, would it still be okay to rec? oof u_u
yeah, this exactly, especially re: grammar. ;~; i guess i should just... try to make a list that is my own recommendations. ugh. there's a lot of fic in my fandom but i don't actually like most of it. :/
if it's a big fandom then chances are there are other rec lists floating around anyway? so you can make one that's just what you think other people should read. like an extra layer of filtering? idk
yeah, that's a good point! i've seen a few comprehensive ones floating around and i know of a couple active rec journals. i guess the appeal of a reclist in a bigger fandom is the personal touch.
also, if you're trying to cater to fandom as a whole, you could make a more general list and indicate ones that you personally liked with an asterisk or something similar. i've seen a few rec lists/blogs that do that.
