oh i love host club au. i wonder why it isn't written more (well, i haven't seen any for my fandoms), it seems like it could be one of those overused tropes but it just... isn't.
yup, i should have linked like anon did. i too have the feeling that, many times, by the end of the definition the effect is lost in the prose. but there are some entries here and there to which i relate so much, so it gives me pleasure to read them.
i haven't thought about it like that, partly because fandom doesn't have a problem with disregarding reality anyway, and partly because i've never seen the host world as particularly mysterious. i mean, i know some japanese hosts. but i don't claim it to be a simple thing.
i do think that if you're going to write something fun despite lack of expertise, host clubs are pretty safe. (as long as you don't claim to know shit when you just pulled it out of your ass)
Minho : I'm a member of Kyu-line~ Kyuhyun : The members are Ryeowook, DBSK Changmin and SHINee Minho. Donghae : I want to join the line as well. Kyuhyun and Minho laugh. Yesung : You should make you own line and call it Donghae-line~ Donghae : No, no, I want to join Kyu-line. Minho : There are some criteria to be part of the line Fans : HEIGHT Minho : No, no. Yesung points to Ryeowook. They all laugh. Minho : No, the height isn't one. You must like what Kyuhyun enjoys. The requirements are game and wine. Wine is the most important.
idk i just feel it ought to be handled sensitively? like prostitute!au, where i sometimes find it hard to read because it's almost always about how person A falls in love with prostitute B and they live out their lives happily and the prostitution is just a plot device. it obviously goes deeper than that but maybe i want these aus less for entertainment and more for it to paint these charters in a more human light idk
then again someone can just write ouran au and that would be the fluffy, light version of it that i would still totally read
it's the first host club au i've ever come across in any fandom and it's the maknae line omfg my heart. the yeoljong would be fascinating and the myungjong too and of course the myungyeol and how it will be resolved too. but the writer said she's not continuing so :(
i just accept both kinds of host club aus with open arms. or, well, depending on my mood i prefer one or the other. i go for the lighter approach if i want silly fluff, though usually i yearn for realistic drama.
