i haven't thought about it like that, partly because fandom doesn't have a problem with disregarding reality anyway, and partly because i've never seen the host world as particularly mysterious. i mean, i know some japanese hosts. but i don't claim it to be a simple thing.
i do think that if you're going to write something fun despite lack of expertise, host clubs are pretty safe. (as long as you don't claim to know shit when you just pulled it out of your ass)
idk i just feel it ought to be handled sensitively? like prostitute!au, where i sometimes find it hard to read because it's almost always about how person A falls in love with prostitute B and they live out their lives happily and the prostitution is just a plot device. it obviously goes deeper than that but maybe i want these aus less for entertainment and more for it to paint these charters in a more human light idk
then again someone can just write ouran au and that would be the fluffy, light version of it that i would still totally read
i just accept both kinds of host club aus with open arms. or, well, depending on my mood i prefer one or the other. i go for the lighter approach if i want silly fluff, though usually i yearn for realistic drama.
