how do you convince yourself to start working on a paper?

give yourself a goal reward (or punishment if that's more your style)

or just open it up and write one sentence, i find that's half the battle most of the time

procrastinate until i literally have no time to procrastinate any more (usually about 4-5 hours before it's due) and then fall into productive self loathing
