TAMMY BALDWIN, the Senator-Elect from Wisconsin, will become the first openly gay person ever elected to Senate. MAZIE HIRONO, the Senator-Elect from Hawaii, will become the first Asian-American woman in Senate. TAMMY DUCKWORTH, the Representative-Elect for Illinois, will become the first disabled female veteran elected to the House of Reps. (she lost both her legs in the Iraq War).
“The Democratic House leadership is considering stripping protections for transgender people from ENDA after a preliminary vote count found the measure would not pass if it had trans-inclusive language. ‘The fact of the matter is, we’ve been canvassing this — the votes just are not there for a trans-inclusive bill,’ said Steven Adamske, spokesman for Rep. Barney Frank, sponsor of the original bill. Reps. Frank and Tammy Baldwin, the only openly gay members of Congress, called for the count after they learned House speaker Nancy Pelosi feared the measure lacked enough support to pass.”
i've been following her for years, and afaik baldwin helped remove the gender identity language to get it passed but then attempted to reintroduce the language to the bill. recall the ENDA did not get signed into law at all. where did you get your information, anon? tumblr?
da and i'm looking at the videos and the statements and the only place calling her transphobic is one tumblr comment that got a lot of notes
in this capnews clip, she explicitly states makes the amendment to bring the floor's attention to the fact that enda wasn't trans* friendly, but withdrew it because she knew that if she tried to get it to pass, then enda would fail for sure. like she knew that enda was only helping a portion, introduced the amendment to make a point, and then withdrew it in hopes that enda would pass after all. she says, straight up, "i believe that those who will be left behind by this bill, deserve to hear, on this house floor, that you are not forgotten, and our job will not be finished until you too share fully in the American dream."
yep that's exactly what i mean. and so while there is a larger discussion to be made about what use an ENDA ia without gender identity protection, and what political utility there is to chipped away bills like this, i'm not comfortable saying that this action alone makes her transphobic. smh at everyone on my dash reblogging that one post like they know what they're talking about.
as anon who said she was transphobic, thankyou so much for posting this!! sorry for making the comment when i'd only read a couple of website/blog posts about it u_u obviously its more complicated than i thought.
ok!! as long as you know a little more u_u pls be very careful about taking news from tumblr, and about calling congresspeople transphobic or any other claim about their stance without educating yourself first. she was basically the only person to bring trans* back into the conversation, calling her transphobic is just... very far from the truth lol :(

yeah lol i'm not an american so it's not stuff i follow closely
but tbh i find any willingness to remove protection for trans ppl or to sacrifice trans ppls protection for the sake of mainstream lgb campaigns concerning, so~ a matter of opinion i guess
da and i don't think she was trying to throw trans* people under the bus. they weren't even being considered in the original bill, and she made the amendment to bring the floor's attention to the fact that this was happening. she wasn't removing protection for trans people or sacrificing their protection for mainstream lgb campaigns, because this protect didn't even exist. she was the one trying to bring t into lgbt, but only withdrew it because if she pushed for lgbt, it would fail and not even lgb would get any rights. this:
"i believe that those who will be left behind by this bill, deserve to hear, on this house floor, that you are not forgotten, and our job will not be finished until you too share fully in the American dream."
does not sound transphobic to me at all. please fact check before you listen to tumblr anon, calling a congressperson transphobic is a big deal :\
thankyou so much for taking the time to explain this to me, im sorry :( i did read some sources other than tumblr lol but i haven't followed american politics closely so i shouldnt be making comments like that, especially not when she's one of the few queer reps :( sorry!!!
haha it's ok! it's just that her getting into a congress is a big deal, and watching someone derail this massive accomplishment on a grossly misinformed lie is just... really bad :( as long as you walk away with a more educated answer :)
