The deadline to turn in fics has been pushed back to Nov 12. I apologize for the last minute change but I have to travel unexpectedly for personal reasons and will not be available for the next week or so. If you have any questions or concerns please email me at kficanon@gmail.com and I will get back to you as soon as I can.
i picked a fic i hated because i'm in one of those moods, lol. if anything made me the most mad in this fic it was that she had a great characterization of chanyeol so it's not like she's incapable of writing anything that's not shallow as hell but her tao is a flimsy self-insert. there's certain personality traits of tao's present there but they're presented in a very non tao-like way. the concept of sleepwalking and the advice column would've made for some cute stuff if it wasn't balanced out by tao being too dumb to function and the taoris relationship progressing way too fast without the evidence in the scenes to back it up. and the ending was lazy as fuck.
Re: anon that was looking for the baekhyun essay anons
i'm so glad you picked this one, because i could complain about it forever. i don't know enough about ctab to call her tao a self-insert, but wow she wrote him over the top and flimsy as a cardboard cutout. tao is both too dumb to function and too stalkery to function, and the taoris relationship wasn't there at all. there wasn't even a mutual confession, let alone kissing.
i wish someone could rescue this concept from ctab and write something less meandering, better characterized, and with 100% more kissing.
i actually don't know that much about her either but when you give your main character lines about like being too dumb for plebeians to understand you and there's something not really evident in his personality, i'm going to assume that's all the author, lol.
the no kissing thing, oh my god i could've killed her. pg-13, WHY?
i feel like her chanyeol characterization had flashes of great...and then she lapsed back into that "he's an insane genius" trope that she keeps shoehorning him into, and that disappointed me so much
re: tao, there's certain personality traits of tao's present there but they're presented in a very non tao-like way. is exactly how i feel (and ik it's au and you're allowed, but the baektao dynamic or lack thereof rly pressed me)
the first one is http://tyreling-fanfic.livejournal.com/102447.html#cutid1, a kris/lay from tyreling.
i've never read anything from her before. it's not terrible, but it's just very bland. it's like the set-up to the first episode in a kdrama. i like that it's a spin on the classic coffeeshop story -- it's not the coffee or yixing that keeps bringing kris back, but the inspirational quotes that yixing writes on kris' cup. yixing's characterization is almost nonexistent (just pleasant, sort of humorous, shy). i liked that kris was the one dealing with language differences. that's unusual in exo fic. i wish she had done more with kris' isolation, or even told us more about what kind of business he was in, or giving yixing any kind of spark that would make him individual and not lu han or jongdae or anyone else in the band. but there was a great scene during christmas where he envisions himself going home and being lonely, and yixing responds in kind with a quote about loneliness. overall, forgettable, but still an okay read.
i picked infinite and dashidorawa for the fandom/comm that's foreign to me. i ended up settling on penny_lane_42's myungsoo/sungyeol (http://penny-lane-42.livejournal.com/314351.html).
i actually enjoyed this fic. obviously i can't comment on characterization, so i won't, but i got that there was an interesting tension in sungyeol's personality. he likes being an idol but he's also apparently not as into it as his bandmates. myungsoo seems to be a drifter, someone who lets himself be carried with the flow. both these fics deal with isolation (myungsoo is in japan?), but penny_lane's fic in some ways overdoes the isolation whereas tyreling seems to underdevelop it. i think penny_lane's fic went on too long for too little of a concept (myungsoo tries to come to grip with his motivation for what he does, while sungyeol is frustrated that myungsoo doesn't seem to be taking his own life into his own hands, rinse and repeat). i did like the ambiguous ending, where the two of them sit and neither of them really talk about their issues.
i can't decide if i wanted more from the other bandmates or less. on the one hand, they were easily some of the most enjoyable parts of the fic -- the brief glimpses of them you get through the text messages, the few group scenes, myungsoo's memories of a dorm? i can't really tell when they all lived together but i assumed they did from his memories. but it did make myungsoo's isolation stand out all the more. i'd like to have seen more interaction with him and the other band members though.
penny_lane's language is simple but with memorable twists. a few lines really stood out to me: he'll have to unlearn the mistakes, myungsoo fishing out his hair from the bath, the lines of the sketch exaggerated for artistic affect , woohyun's mask being hard to pry off. i think she could use work with her section breaks. there are too many tiny sections and they seem to splinter the flow. it makes the fic feel like it's covering a longer passage of time than it actually is.
overall, a good story! i don't think i'd remember it but i did find it interesting to read and it covered that always interesting divide in kpop between idol and human being, and the writing was very smooth and practiced.
they're not explosively popular as a group, i guess? whenever you see those girl group rankings run by the knetizens, they're always considered lower tier
flashes of great is a better way to describe it. i mean that part about him not letting people close was great and then she went back to fanon chanyeol >:(
same here wrt to the baektao dynamic. again it's an au but just kind of glossing over the fact that they're friends was odd to me. as was the whole story really.
yeah i really enjoy her stories usually if only for the fact that she writes a good plot imo, but this time the characterization threw me off completely.
