i just scanned it super quick and noticed the random chinese in there so idk about your second point (yet) but YEAH lmao i hate that shit. ANY usage of a foreign language without proper context/translations will always irk me :|||and not even just in fanfic but also in regular fiction

exactly. and of course there will be words that cannot be translated like 'hyung' or 'unnie' but at least they're romanized. titles in korean/chinese are bad enough, but put it in dialogue and you're dead to me lol

some published authors do it all the time but it's for a different effect i think than you often see in fic

yeah like i'm fine with people like sandra cisneros for instance, or amy tan in the joy luck club—i'm okay when they use it because their work is so often mired in these other cultures and want to reflect them in a way that often needs the introduction of the mother tongue of these characters

but the other day i read this cheever short story where there was just this huge paragraph of untranslated french smack in the middle of the story AND I GOT SO ANNOYED LMAO like w h y did you think that was at all necessary, dude?! like i took french in hs so i could marginally parse what it meant but i was nhft

haha yeah it totally depends on the context of the piece itself and what the author is going for. one interesting thing about exo fandom is it does seem like a lot of fans know chinese so i can sort of understand why they'd be tempted to insert some of that in there. on the other hand though, not when it's easily translatable.
