aw I'm glad your friend has you to help! that's really good and can still be really helpful to people!

I don't think I will, it's harder to make friends now and I'm so shy anyway, but I'm trying to write anyway! :D/

what you could also do is just take a few elements from her long ass prompt and only use those instead of the whole detailed list they gave you and if you can, write an authors note to the recipient saying, gurl you left me one prompt that was really detailed, and as much as i wanted to give you all that you wanted, it just wasn't working for me so i took some of what you wanted and wrote you this

for longfics with plot, I start out with my general idea (what is the story I'm going to tell, what basic motions will it go through, how do I want it to end/what kind of ending do I want it to have). And once I have the general idea, I start thinking of different scenes within the fic. I'll make notes of points/areas I want to hit, events I want to take place, situations I would like to happen.

If I have at least the broad outline and slightly more detailed scene ideas within, I find writing the fic itself to go by quite quickly!

Is this kind of advice helping, anon, or am I on the wrong track?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
i think i will to that anon u__u i'm not a good enough writer, nor do i have enough time, to do her prompt proper justice. and i'd rather get out a decent fic with only 1/4 of what she wants, than a bad long fic filled to the brim with things i can't do. i wish i had told a mod earlier now, but i need to make best of this situation.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
yes, this advice is def helping u__u you're on exactly the write track. i've always been a writer who just starts of with something and just lets the fic go wherever it may, and i don't usually write more than 8k. so trying to write an actual work with a plot is really out of my depth ;;

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
are you trying to bribe me anon?

+1

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
tho maybe worded less presssagely lol

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
it would be a tragic love story of ken trying to woo a statue named leo who eventually gets his heart melted by stupid dog sounds and oottoookajiii's

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
which has been the least rewarding challenge you've been in? and the most rewarding?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
8k is still pretty long for kpop fic one shots tbh, so I wouldn't say you're too far out of your depth at all anon, don't worry!! I recently finished writing a long fic too actually, it didn't even start off as a longfic idea it was meant to be a drabble but then more ideas came and it just took on a life of it's own, so it can totally happen like that too!

is there a particular wordcount you have to achieve, or something? even if more specific planning isn't necessarily something you're used to, I find if you just think about the kind of story you want to tell, and how you want people to feel by the end of it, things like that, can help with the plotting as well!

and don't be afraid to go out of the chronology, if something comes to mind just write it, and you can always go back and work on the connecting pieces later! plans are good by you need room to manuever as well!

i just wonder abt the scene building. i can often think of 23525 events and scenes i want in the fic but most of them are just nice snapshots of a moment or w/e and are often pointless in relation to the plot, like nothing rly happens and it doesn't bring the plot forward. (or maybe my problem is that the fic in question doesn't have a very moving plot and thus nothing happens IDK)

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
the least rewarding was definitely olymfics. most rewarding would probably be ficmix, because the remixee sounded really pleased with what i did with her fic, and that made me feel good u___u

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
olymfics seems to lead to nothing but disappointment on all ends.

troisbang was super fun when i participated! christmas exchanges can be rewarding, just depends on your luck.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
all my fics that are 5K tho, were never written with the intention of being that long. i always had them in mind as a small 1-2k fic, but they always kinda spiral out of control. so basically what you said about an idea spiralling out of control.

there isn't a wordcount i have to achieve. but the general plot/idea i have, probably won't be able to be done in under 10k, because... well, there is an actual plot i wanna write, and there are lots of aspects to it. but i just don't know how to go about writing this. because i'm so used to things just kinda writing themselves, and i've never intentionally written longfic before ;;

ty for this advice anon!

I don't think there's anything necessarily wrong with those kind of scenes! what are they snapshots of? not everything has to necessarily move the plot forward, but are they snapshots of the characters, of a situation? if they can bring an understanding to a character, or a moment in time, then I don't see anything wrong with scenes like that within a fic!

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
tbh i wish i hadn't participated in olymfics this year u__u i was rly excited for it, but in the end just... idk, nothing.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
yuletide and yuletide for both lol

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
idk

but here's a pile of cash :)

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think I've had a least rewarding really, though the one time I entered the, uh what was it called again, the drabble writing LIMS, that was my least favourite experience.

I really enjoyed the time I did troisbang, I think it produced one of my best fics! and though I only pinchhit last time, I had a good time with ficmix. other than that, the secret santas I've participated in have been nice, it's nice to give people fic to enjoy!

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
for people who've participated in olymfics this year, is there even a choice for the former question apart from olymfics?

most rewarding would have to be loveismix, had lots of fun with that!

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
they're more just like.. things i like. like, i like watching soccer in the summer, and thus i want my fic to have a scene where they watch soccer in the summer, and that's it, it really adds nothing to anything. unless i make it a thing, unless they discuss something meaningful during the game but there's really only so much meaningful things they can discuss and idk. if the point of it is for them to discuss it, then even mentioning them watching soccer will seem stupid and out of place and unnecessary.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
a little bit of both. i don't like to edit too much while writing bc then i tend to not finish

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
olymfics relies too much on how willing people are willing to get involved. kpop ficdom is too slow atm to support the challenge and make it worth it.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-24 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I really love the feeling when a fic just takes on an idea of it's own and has to write itself, it feels so nice like everythings cosmically coming together ;~;

oh I see what you mean then! I'd say you probably can't go wrong with planning, making notes, have an idea of a basic order for the events you at least know are going to happen and when they might take place! especially if it's a complex plot or has a lot going on! as long as I know what scenes I have to write, my longfic writing goes really steadily!

your welcome, I don't get to talk fic much but I've written quite a few longfics so any help I can give I am glad to do it! good luck and I hope you have fun! ♥
