no, i hadn't backtraced before i posted this and as another indian and another girl, i don't think there is anything wrong if the world judges our country and keeps their women away from it. it is a truth that india is not safe for woman and it is something to be ashamed of, not to defend. forget everything, even if it's rooted in all the wrong reasons, judge us so that people wake up, so that people want to prove otherwise. because if this is not something to be ashamed of, you don't understand what it is.
+1 i can get incredibly defensive about my country & the skewed perception people have of it but man this is an issue that really really needs attention. it's a fact that women here deal w/ sexual harrassment a lot and it's not safe at all/the police is mostly incompetent (especially in north india) and if the negative attention prods the governnent into action i'm all for it
the country deserves every bit of shame and judgement for this. it is not about us who are not affected: "Let's not forget that the protest wasn't about how angry you are or the way you feel. It's not about you. It's about the 23 year old girl who comes from a family of modest means, whose daddy couldn't hire a driver for her, whose eyes lit up when she saw a bus that offered to drop her home."
i know it's useless and selfish or whatever but i just feel so sorry. like i just feel so, so sorry and i wish i could undo it all for her. all she wanted to do was watch a movie with her friend and look how we treated her.
no, i completely understand! i don't think other anon was defending india, but rather saying that there was some progress that hasn't necessarily been told by the media? i'm generally very skeptical of western media in the way that it paints developing countries so i don't really know
and this is completely related but i hate that phrase 'wake up' because every conspiracy theorist uses that and it makes me hate them and it
then i suggest reading an indian newspaper on any day. forget this incident, read it on any day. you will no doubt find 3-4 articles about crime against women. murdered, raped, abused. it is not about what people think anymore, it is not a perception, it is a fact. india treats its women like filth. if any women progress, it is because of their fortitude and their spirit and the improving economy, not because the political or social system is supporting them.
da but i feel like the misunderstanding of india's violence against women stems partly from people not wanting to look racist so they just hush up when problems in india arise and partly from people just not being aware of indian culture in general, both its positive and negative parts
which i understand and i appreciate, that people do not want to pass judgement on things without the facts, or they do not feel they have the knowledge an informed opinion would require. but the fact remains that this girl, this 23 year old girl, was raped and beaten to near death with a rusty, iron rod by seven different men for 3 hours and those men are alive and she is not. that she waited two weeks, fought for her life for two weeks, but could not see justice.
it doesn't matter who she was or where she was from, look what happened to her and please, judge us as a nation because we let it happen.
all i wanted to say, i may have generalized because i'm just so angry right now, is that women in india overcome so much to get where they are. of course i'm not saying all men are bad, but india is grossly patriarchal. it is a mindset. a man might treat me well and love me but he, somewhere, might still feel superior, even if it has no physical manifestation of consequence. women in india need help and support to change the mindsets of the men in this country and it is a large battle.
da but my god thank you anon. i know anon earlier had her reasons for wanting to show how india's had some progress and all but why bring that up in the midst of the discussion about the gang rape? i feel like rather than getting defensive about how other people are perceiving our country, even if it stems from inaccurate view, the fact is this horrible thing DID happen and as an indian i would want as many people to know how horrible our country is so that something can change. it is because of people defending and wanting to cover up these crimes that things like the police telling the girl to marry her rapist happens.
i agree, anon. i was so horrified to see them resorting to expletives and accusations of racism when everybody has the right to condemn what has happened.
all the derailing in that thread was just ridiculous, idek why they were so angry about it and trying to stop anyone who wasnt indian not to discuss the issue, like wtaf??? i mean granted the other anon was being rude as fuck but i could see where they were coming from, i just didnt get what she were trying to prove earlier.
to be fair i think everybody just lost the point of the topic and it derailed so quickly into a weird, personal fight, it was quite disheartening in one sense. the indian anon's refusal to listen didn't help of course but none of that diluted the merit of discussion the topic deserved and i didn't want it to go unaddressed.
i stayed the fuck out of that thread earlier but im so glad you brought it up again. its a touchy subject for everyone but it needed to be addressed properly, like you said.
