why do you feel like you have to be part of the conversation so badly, though? i mean i feel you to a degree, anon, i used to be one of those white tumblr feminists, but i feel like you learn more just by listening to people. if you really want to contribute to the conversation, thank the poc you talk to for sharing their stories. if you feel like you need to ask a question, establish yourself as somebody willing to learn and maybe even apologize ahead of time for anything problematic you might unwittingly say. but never tell poc how they should feel, act as an authority, or fight somebody else's battle.
"but never tell poc how they should feel, act as an authority, or fight somebody else's battle."
i don't wanna do any of that. if i go "oh this seems like this" and if someone goes "no its like" i'm willing to listen. that's a discussion. i don't wanna argue and piss on people's feelings.
well people feel very intensely about this topic so sometimes, yes, they are probably going to be upset if you express a view that's problematic, even if you're willing to listen. instead of saying "it seems like x" maybe say "does it seem like x for you?" "how do you feel about x?" so that you emphasize their voice instead of yours? or do research on your own and look up what poc writers have written about the specific topic you're interested in instead of forcing the conversation on somebody who isn't obligated to be nice to every curious white person.
