i was reading up on some hugo schwyzer wank the other day and thinking a lot about the role of men in the feminist movement. i do think that deconstructing masculinity is important but idk how i feel about a dude preaching to ladies about what it means to be a lady.

so legit question to POC anons on meme: what do you think the role of white people should be in discussions of race? in real life, i may comment if an ignorant white person is the one broaching the subject but i usually just listen if people of color are talking. and i generally don't comment about race on meme since there's no way for me to know who i'm talking to.

white anon so i'm not gonna comment on your second part but hugo schwyzer is a piece of shit rapist and i hope he gets hit by a fucking bus

he is seriously the worst. that "why most mass murders are white middle class dudes" article he wrote keeps getting posted on my fb feed and while i want to admit that some of the things he said were interesting i hate him so much that i just can't

tip for irl: don't ever start a sentence to me with "so as a person of colour"

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 10:16 am (UTC)(link)
i would never anon, sorry if this sounded that way. obviously everybody is an individual and shouldn't be held up as a representative for every not-white person in the world

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 10:12 am (UTC)(link)
idk say what you like as long as it's not stupid

you're absolutely entitled to talk about it but talk about what you know. i don't want a white person telling me about asian culture, i don't want a white person telling me about black culture or native american culture. i want a person that's experienced it telling me about it. you're free to talk but if an asian/black/arab/muslim/transgendered person tells you to shut up, then shut up.

also, when poc are talking about their experiences, just be quiet and listen

lol also this: http://angryasiangirlsunited.tumblr.com/whitefollowers

the fact that the mod also had to state at least once that she wasn't publishing stories from white people and how they're affected because it wasn't for them.

i want a person that's experienced it telling me about it.

da and living in thailand for 7 months as a white person in a position of power does not count

neither does studying history and spending a few hours studying a country

yes ia

thanks anon, this is a really great comment. the concept of "speak from your own experience" is something that i'll keep in mind.

and that link makes me facepalm sf hard, some white people seriously feel entitled to every space...

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
why would a black person be able to tell you about asian culture?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 01:06 pm (UTC)(link)
i didn't say that.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 10:37 am (UTC)(link)
unless they know what they're talking about and don't try to speak for the experiences of people of color, i'm cool. what i hate is when i try to talk about race and how awkward i feel as an poc in a group of white people, and they try to convince me to not feel that way because ~color doesn't matter~ and i should stop thinking like that because it's a "negative mindset", and they've never felt that way so why do i????? /rage

same thing men tell feminists
