after i replied i realized that i could be reaching but it sounds closer to what he said than what you wrote he said...the issue is that there are probably things being lost in translation here too so it's probably better not to try to dissect their words when they might be saying something else entirely lol

while i would never insist that it is a closeted declaration and i think you could be completely right, there are things other than just this interview that lead me to believe that it could mean something. it would take me an eternity to try to explain though and it would probably come out as some convoluted mess so i don't know if i should bother. and i'll sound really delusional.
