mostly dialogue sry :(

when sunggyu gets back to the dorm from the restaurant, myungsoo is sitting in the living room. the tv is on, but he stares straight ahead, arms wrapped around his knees. he turns it off when sunggyu steps inside.

"hey," says sunggyu, stepping out of his shoes. "where are the others?"

"in bed. did you have a good ride with sajangnim?" asks myungsoo. his eyes are open all the way, blank and black like he makes them when he's l. sunggyu presses his lips together.

"yeah," he says. he's debating whether to relate the news yet. he should really wait until all of them are there, so they can discuss it as a team, and...

"i want to help," says myungsoo, and sunggyu blinks up at him in surprise.

"what?"

"i want to help out." he's staring at his feet, perched on the couch. "i don't know what, but i want to. support you."

sunggyu's still taken aback by the fact that he knows, but maybe it was clear what was going on from the start. he shrugs. "it's all pretty much there. jungyeop-ssi said that nell sunbaenims have agreed to produce, and there's a trainee who plays bass, and..."

"i don't want you to leave," says myungsoo with his eyes closed, and sunggyu stops mid-sentence. then he walks over and sits down on the couch next to myungsoo's socked feet.

"i'm not going to leave," he says quietly. "i won't. i promise." he shifts, then forces himself to grin. "yah, are you kidding? what would you kids do without me?" this makes myungsoo smile, still looking down, so he keeps going. "who would be the leader? woohyun? no way. no, this is just..."

my dream, he wants to say, but he doesn't. instead he reaches out and takes myungsoo's hand in both of his, and myungsoo's fingers curl around his.

"i'll think of something," says myungsoo. "but i want to be there."

"yeah," says sunggyu. "i'd like that."

it sort of bothers me that anons get so riled up about aus (eg. mental institutes, military etc.) i realize these kinds of fics can be triggering and all but do you guys feel the same way about books or films? because some people put enough thought and care into well done aus so that they're not used as cheap plot devices. also, the inevitable "it's just fiction" arguments, even concerning rpf. especially reading the reactions above makes me think that a bunch of people just have their panties in a twist.

i should quit meme, it's bad for my blood pressure.

sorry.

idk as somebody who has been in the mental ward of a hospital before i don't think this would be instantly offensive or insensitive to me. it's just that mental institutions are like, say, schools, and they vary a lot in the type of environment and the quality of staff but the way they get portrayed is pretty one-note

some potentially triggery stuff ahead but when i was admitted, i started in the ward with the most dangerous patients because that's how state law works. it was awful, like literally what you see in the movies. very run-down looking, padded cells, this other patient told me that she was going to rape me in my sleep and none of the cells have locks on them, sooo. very terrifying and the staff treated everybody like shit; some nurse kept giving me condescending lectures about how i should find god and stop trying to kill myself.

but then after 48 hours they deemed me safe enough to go to another ward and this one was just a bunch of teenagers playing xbox on nice, new couches and everybody was just hanging out and talking to each other. totally bizarre. so i disagree that mental institutions are always these awful traumatizing things that can never be taken lightly or portrayed in a fun way? it just takes very, very careful writing and even then, with a subject like this, some people are still going write you off.

anons probably only thought of bad kpop fic. i'm pretty sure they'd be okay with books or films or well written fan fiction (although it was already mentioned why not everyone wants this stuff in fan fiction, but rather in original fiction) that deal with these issues with thought, care, research, etc. anons at least later clearly stated that what they have a problem with is using this type of stuff as mere plot devices.

and lol you don't need to care so much about what a group of anons say. there are as many opinions to anything and everything here as there are anons. :)

(Anonymous) 2012-11-26 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
i replied super late to the post in question but i definitely agree with you that not everybody is going to write it cheaply. with sensitivity and research behind the author's belt, it could be written very well? and i'd like to see mental institutions portrayed as more lighthearted places of healing instead of decrepit hell holes all the time.

but i also understand the anons reaction bc based on the way kpop fandom as a whole treats these kinds of issues in fic...

(Anonymous) 2012-11-26 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
da but in what way does the kpop fandom treat these kind of issues in fics?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-26 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
lmao i think i've talked about this on meme before in the past but books and films are certainly more vetted than fanfiction, if that makes sense. fic fandom tends to skew toward relationship-centric/character-driven fic and when stuff like mental/terminal illness is used as a plot device to get two people together imo it's really tactless. if the same thing is done in a book or a film (NICHOLAS FUCKING SPARKS) then i'm def going to side-eye as well? there's still a difference between profic and fanfic, and i'm inclined to give profic authors more benefit of the doubt when it comes to sensitive topics because they're... actually getting published, so one hopes they're doing the research/putting enough care into the work that it's not tasteless and exploitative. still, it happens. on the flip side there certainly is fic that broaches sensitive topics very well, but when like 90% of fanfiction is meant to get people off you get stuff like sex having curative powers over depression and people miraculously regaining their memories THROUGH THE POWER OF LOVE~. it's dumb, and it's what happens when immature writers need plot devices and decide to use something that they know will get a reaction from people.

i don't think any of us are saying it can't be done well, in fanfiction or just in general fiction. a lot of books and movies and tv shows about war are thoughtful and thought-provoking and true to life. same with mental illness in novels (the curious incident of the dog in the night-time comes to mind). but obviously the stakes are higher with published work. when you're "just" writing fanfiction it feels like there's less onus on the author to thoroughly research things and fully plot them out. they just want the instant gratification, you know?

sorry this is so convoluted and rambly u_u i'm open to clarifying things if nothing makes sense lmao

da and kpop demands porn of any/all sorts but the moment it goes something serious like op said people get riled up and are like nooooooooo

a bit ot but omg that fucking book is so amazing ;;

(Anonymous) 2012-11-26 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
right? i love it ;_; i reread it a couple of months ago and it's still so great.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-26 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
i read it when i was younger because my brother has autism/asperger and it was so realistic and amazing and i really need to reread it now ;~;

+1 to all this

(Anonymous) 2012-11-26 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
read any of the numerous "x has bipolar disorder" fics out there and see for yourself? either they read like a recitation of cliche symptoms, demonize and duhmanize people with bipolar disorder, or use the disorder as a cheap plotpoint to lead to the ~heartbreaking climax~ or sex

(Anonymous) 2012-11-26 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
i'm fine with having my panties in a twist about someone clearly looking to exploit mental illness without personal experience.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-26 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
imo published novels can sometimes deal with some themes shittier than fics though? i generally give published authors no leeway if they're dealing with sensitive topics because they should know they're shit since THEY ARE FUCKING PUBLISHED.

tbh if i write any fic that wasn't pwp i can put several hours into just research because i like to nitpick things.

although i still sometimes wish people would see that there are other fanfics than just porn :( it sort of makes me sad that there some many awesome fics with no porn and they have so little comments

(Anonymous) 2012-11-26 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
da but there are published authors who have written books about mental illness with though and sensitivity and without exploiting it and without personal experience? i suppose it's different from fic though?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-26 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
how do you know they're going to write it in an exploitative way, though? and if they're a psych major they may have experience working in a mental institution with patients?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-26 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
i think panties is dirty word
