I'm the anon that's been writing, well, most of the f(x) metas but I love these girls so much so I'm going to try and write a comprehensive meta on all of them someday. Anyway, I wrote this (http://kficrevolution.dreamwidth.org/2058.html?thread=7687946#cmt7687946) and this (http://kficanon.dreamwidth.org/1775.html?thread=274415#cmt274415) as well as another one that I can't find at the moment.
Background info:
Amber never really intended to become an idol. She went with her friend to the SM audition to give her support and then woops, they accepted Amber and not her friend and Amber was on a plane to South Korea. Amber sang in the audition, by the way, and didn't have an intention to become a rapper. She says bands like Linkin Park, A Day to Remember, and Blink 182 were her favorites in America so she wasn't very much into kpop – she much preferred her pop-punk scene. Which is so ironic imo but idk I think it's so cute when she tweets songs like Sidewalks by Story of the Year while other idols typically tweet more like...........IDK lmfao it's just funny to me (maybe bc I was into pop-punk and kpop and that makes her even more relatable.) Anyway, she wore half calves and those ridiculous baggy shorts when she was a kid and dyed her hair pink and went through her embarrassing phase like the rest of us. However, she was an SNSD fangirl (Taeyeon was her bias) which is probably why she agreed to go along to the SM audition.
Growing up, Amber was the youngest of two sisters in a very loving and seemingly close knit family. She still talks to Jackie all the time – they have a loving yet playful relationship, and Jackie is always willing to tease Amber (see their twitter conversations, it's adorable). Her dad is probably where she got her goofiness from because the guy is hilarious. I think growing up in such a loving and endlessly supportive family made it pretty hard for her to leave them at such a young age, and it definitely caused part of her homesickness. Her family was also very religious, but in a different way – she cites Bible passages and such, but just from her demeanor and her family's demeanor, I see them more as the accepting Christians that encourage love and such. Though, of course, that's just an inference from the evidence I've seen.
In school, Amber played basketball and it is believed she got pretty good grades. She was a pretty good basketball player, as well. She hung out with a lot of boys, not unlike in Korea. However, she left for Korea when she was 15 in 2007 so she never finished high school in America; I've heard she finished in Korea with tutors so pretty much that phase of her life ended in 2007.
Coming to Korea was a big shock for her. First of all, Amber was Taiwanese-American, and not Korean at all so the whole thing was a huge culture shock. Second of all, Amber is not a skilled linguist so she couldn't catch on to Korean easily. She was a valley girl that somehow ended up across an ocean on a joke and she didn't know what to do. She wasn't all alone though – there was Krystal. Now, although many people think they just have a fanservice-y relationship, it's so much more than that. Krystal was the most familiar thing she had, she could speak English with her, she could reminisce abut home with her – Krystal was everything Amber needed. They used to be caught going out together all the time and even holding hands, people thinking they were boyfriend and girlfriend. So their friendship is so much more, it's a bond that I think they'll always have.
Amber trained the least out of f(x), only 2 years, which is very little compared to Krystal (accepted into SM when she was what, 7, even though she only trained for f(x) exclusively since she was 13 or s/t), Sulli (child actress), Victoria (left home at an extremely young age to attend dance academy in Beijing) and Luna (accepted after appearing on a show in 2006, been singing since childhood).
Amber is very insecure. Her confidence definitely took a hit when she came to Korea – she didn't catch on as fast as everyone else, she was the least talented in f(x), and also the least liked (because despite her strong international fanbase, Amber is easily the least popular member in Korea because her style doesn't fit Korean standards of women). Compared to the four child prodigies she worked with, what was she? And so she missed home more and more every day because Amber felt like she didn't belong. Compared to girls like the ones in SNSD, the girls in her group, and everyone around her, Amber just felt so much like she didn't belong. Krystal cited that Amber locks herself in the bathroom during meals and it's just heartbreaking to hear bc you can tell how much she misses home. Trainee days seemed very difficult for her, but she perservered bc she risked everything for this chance.
During the end the NU Abo promotions, Amber looked exhausted. Well, they all looked exhausted, but Amber looked really exhausted, which is uncharacteristic of her. Amber left f(x) after Nu ABO for 6 months. Now, in my other meta I went hella in depth to this, but I'll try to be more concise: it was definitely not an ankle injury. Or not /just/ an ankle injury. It was homesickness for sure. And the way SM tried to market f(x) during that time and act as if Amber never existed is just so suspicious to me. But, anyway, she came back. During her time home she (rode in shopping carts and went to disneyland) practiced really hard!!! lol but she actually did, she worked with Rino and her dance crews and came back more confident than ever and really began to nail her parts in Pinocchio. Her stage presence went up 1000%. I think Amber went through a lot of soul searching during that time and needed the support of her family and old friends. She was looking for a lot of things, but most of all why she was accepted into f(x) – she was searching for the talent that was always there but was lost in translation, for the Amber that was happy go lucky and crazy and not shy and quiet and uncomfortable.
Homesickness has a very large effect on Amber in general. She's friends with just about every English speaking idol in the industry, and I would not hesitate to say that she was drawn to Min bc 1) Min spoke English fluently and 2) Min was from the same area as her. I think she likes having these friendships that remind her of home and can understand her because god even now her Korean is awful (after 5 years lmfao). Ok, it's not /as bad/ but it's still not great.
Even though her confidence has healed, I still think Amber isn't always 100% confident in herself. She always has people talking about how she should dress more feminine and is useless compared to everyone else and her presence in f(x) is pointless. (now, if she wants to dress more feminine and grow her hair out long, then by god do it! But I think it's unfair that people are always trying to tell her what to do and disregard /her/ feelings for it and if she wants to do it. But the same could be said for her dressing tomboyish bc part of f(x)'s marketing technique is the token tomboy.) And the thing is, Amber would take these comments to heart before. Now, I think she isn't as affected by them, but I think she's also learned to not look for them. She's found her niche and is working on drawing out her talents, but until she gets a solo in an f(x) song that proves that she can hit a note like Krystal (which might be in her, if she was actually trained to do so), she will always have to face these comments. And I think she's realized it, now, that even girls like Krystal and Victoria and Luna who are talented and amazing to her get antis and negative comments.
Now, Amber isn't just some lovesick/homesick depressed puppy though! She's quirky and cute and loves to tease her friends (which I'm sure she got from Jackie). She and Krystal are always off about teasing each other and have a super playful, hitting relationship. Amber holds her ground against Krystal and isn't afraid to poke fun at her. She calls Krystal 'Princess' and Krystal calls her 'her servant.' The same goes for Sulli, Luna and even Victoria!! Which is impressive because Victoria off camera can be a hard nut to crack because she's just very caring and mature and guarded and Amber somehow still managed to draw out her playful side. Hell, Amber even infected Seohyun and gets Seohyun to lay in her lap and act childish around her. That's the thing – Amber is contagious. She's charismatic and cute and something about her draws people towards her. In an industry of calculated movements and scripted phrases, Amber has something in her that is so real that nobody can ignore it. Amber doesn't hide behind her stage persona (which SM intended to be dark and mysterious lmfao see how that worked out, she's been derpin' since day one), she presents herself as she is. Even in insider accounts, I've pretty consistantly heard good things about Amber – just that she seems genuine and happy and grateful and etc, and isn't bossy Now, those things can be complete bullshit, but I like to believe one or two might be real? Her childhood friends also say that Amber has always been very sweet and nice and never the type to relentlessly bully.
The thing about Amber is that despite how much 'growing up' she's had to do (leaving home at 15, living on her own in a foreign country), she's still, even at 20 years old, a kid. She goofs off with her friends, gets teased by her sister, and can't believe she's in Korea, that she's famous, that it's all happening to her – amber from the valley. When she gets on stage and does her solo and hears the fans chanting her name, her face still breaks out into this uncontrollable smile like she just can't believe that people are there for her, and she's been doing that since the LaChaTa days. She goes on variety shows and just is herself now – whatever that is, goofball, idiot, pimp lmao – and it's working. She smiles so much more genuinely all the time and she has more friends than ever, including f(x) and the gg of Min, Jia, Tiffany Park, Fei/Suzy, etc. In her thanks to in the albums, she lists off hundreds of people, it's ridiculous, and each has a nickname or is a part of a close knit group, so she isn't just listing for the hell – she honestly feels connected to each and every one of them. She always seems so genuine in everything she does. Amber is not the type that can easily craft a persona like Krystal and, to a lesser extent, Victoria can. Amber is just Amber. She can't really hide who she is and I don't think she wants to. She is and always will be the girl from the valley that is now famous and despite all the ups and downs, she's happy that she landed here.
thank you anon! a lot of it is just my opinions so there's obviously bias, but i was hoping just to get people to understand her a bit better. she's so much more than the 'untalented token tomboy' that people think she is.
well, i think her relationship with key is very interesting! amber is pretty close with all of shinee except for maybe taemin and onew (ok that's not all, lol). he's '91 line and she's '92, so while not exactly same age friends, they're not that far apart from each other, and given that amber isn't korean and doesn't really understand the age thing (or didn't, that's better), and key imo didn't care as much as most, definitely drew them together! (also, there's very few '91 and '92 liners in sm in general so that affects it). key's an outgoing guy, so i'm sure he's the one that struck up the conversation with amber back when she was a trainee and from there they became friends. now, i daresay amber's not as close with key as she is with say, henry, at least not any more, but they are good friends! i can see them just getting along despite the language barrier and conversing in this korean and english mix. tbh, i dont know much about key so i can't comment 100% on what i'd say their dynamic, but key kind of reminds me of krystal sometimes (confident, self-sufficient, sure of his abilities, perfectionist) and amber really isn't any of those things so their relationship also contains that contrast and interest in each other. i can see key just trying to show her around to his idea of sm and teaching her the ropes when krystal isn't around.
wish i knew more about shinee so i could give you more, but i don't :( however, i know they're still friends and like to go partying together even now so that's nice!
anon thank you so much, this is excellent. i'm so fascinated by the idols who get scouted and sort of stumble into fame without trying (like changmin and the jung sisters, and i'm sure others i can't think of), and amber is definitely the most extreme case. i really think she has a lot of moments where she has to step back and wonder how the hell this became her life. (lmao i didn't realize she was a taeyeon fan though...) and i think it's really interesting that sm did want her so badly. i mean say what you will about sme (and they deserve a lot of it), but i don't think there's a single other company that would have debuted her as the tomboy she is. (that said, i think they're excessively focused on her "masculinity" and i think that's the only reason the forced her into the rapper role... i really wish they'd used her as a singer instead.)
also ia that it wasn't an ankle thing, but i don't think it was just homesickness either. i've always suspected it had something to do with a trainee friend of hers dying? in the pinocchio thanks to she says "To Julian, I wish you were here to see this, thanks for everything, miss you so much" and he's mentioned here: http://fyeahhenber.tumblr.com/post/6080304026/fan-account-henry-amber-the-other-trainee. henry was in canada (and then the us) for a lot of 2010 too, it just wasn't as noticeable bc he always has less to do. i mean i agree with your general anaylsis of that time, i think she did a lot of soul-searching, and i think it's really interesting that she came back a better dancer, because it shows that she did come to the conclusion that she wanted f(x).
also ia with the other anon, "amber is contagious" is such a qt/apt way to put it. girl is friends with everyone.
no problem anon, thank you! haha, amber was a crazy taeyeon fan, and it's ironic bc she seems the least close to taeyeon out of all of snsd now (excluding sica lmao). she even posted on soompi about how great taeyeon was and alll of this, girl loved her, which is both embarrassing but endearing. I think SM was working on the concept of having a sort of ... spice girls band? This has been thrown around a lot, but each of the girls in f(x) was marketed with a very specific concept for Chu and Lachata (Victoria = mature, Krystal = sexy, Sulli = cute which seems so unfitting for her personality lmao, Luna = kind of sporty mixed with young?) and they decided that Amber would round them out, idk why, but it's fascinating. But my other theory is that they didn't intend to have Amber be the tomboy for so long - her clothes weren't that masculine in lachata, they were actually formfitting and feminine, and her hair was long enough that it could be a bob if no one cut it for 2 months, it almost seemed as if they were intending to change Amber's concept, but they didn't. But I agree that they focused on her masculinity so much they made her rap when her talent was clearly singing andm later, dancing.
and i definitely agree about Julian's death affecting her. I never knew much about him except for several fan accounts, but he did seem really close to her. and now that you mention that part about henry (i don't know much about him, well, at all orz) it makes a hell of a lot more sense. I do think that his death really devastated her, and mixed with all the inner conflicts she was having then, it kind of was what forced her to realize that she needed to go home. I feel so sorry for the two of them having to go through such a loss of a boy who was so young. It's heartbreaking.
But yes, her time back home made her realize that everything that happened, ups and downs, she still wanted to go back and try her best and be the best she could for f(x). While f(x) aren't marketed as sisters, I think they've all become attached to each other in a way, and Amber is by far the most attached to the concept of f(x) and the four others, now more than ever.
lol embarrassing + endearing is basically amber in a nutshell. but yeah, i thought the same thing, she seems close with a lot of snsd members but not taeyeon really! interesting. and omg i'd never have thought about f(x) as spice girlsish but i think you're really right. your other theory is interesting too though... do you remember when was her hair that long?
hm, after doing a little more digging i'm not sure henry's time in north america was as julian-related... he left for canada in may (and did a music program in boston during the summer), and julian's death was in july i guess. but i do think that's right around when amber disappeared. poor kids :(
i legit almost tore up while reading this, anon. this is so spot on. people fail to realize that amber's just like everyone else, searching for something that will complete her. she has insecurities. and yes, she's a lady. i really hate it that SM is marketing her as the token tomboy. i bet she doesn't even think of herself that way.
that said, thank you so much for doing this. i hope more people will come to appreciate amber after reading this meta. you're amazing, anon ♥
people often fail to look past amber's outward persona and realize what a strong person she is. she's easily one of the most relatable idols i've ever seen because i can feel her and her personality in everything she does. does that make sense? haha
